This Day In Wrecks
1882: An Atlantic Express train is hit by the Tarrytown Special, a Hudson River Railroad train, near Spuyten Duyvil. At least ten people die, including Senator Webster Wagner. Many bystanders try to put out the fire with snow. (pictured)
1982: Air Florida Flight 90 crashes into the 14th Street Bridge over the Potomac River in D.C., killing 4 motorists and all but 5 people on the plane. The pilots failed to follow proper deicing procedures in snowy conditions.
1982: Half an hour later, the Orange Line on the Washington Metro train derails, killing 3 and injuring 25. The emergency response is slowed as personnel are already dealing with the crash of Flight 90.
